Served around 10:15am.
Ben and I dragged our sleepy weekend butts out of bed and journeyed down to Mara's Homemade to join in their special celebration of World Cup festivities!
It was gorgeous outside and Mara had flung open the doors wide to take advantage of the breeze. We ordered steaming cups of cafe au lait to wake ourselves up.
Heavenly! We each gulped down two mugs worth.
Then came the beignets, fresh to order...
This is what Saturday morning happiness looks like. Fried dough mounded with piles of powered sugar!
You must get down to Mara's for fresh beignets and cafe au lait, if you are in New York City!
A good time after our beignets and coffee were finished, we moved on to a round of Abita Purple Haze.
With two hours to kill before the final game of the day, Ben and I took off to wander the Lower East Side, Alphabet City and Union Square.
Our first stop was a quick visit to a yarn store that I rarely go to, since it isn't along any of my typical "flight paths" ~ Downtown Yarns.
I can always find something to bring home with me from this cute little casual yarn shop. Today it was some Rowan Denim.
I wonder if I could adapt this cute little baby jacket to work with this yarn? So sweet!
Later, we circled back up to Idlewild Book Store ~ an independent travel book seller near Union Square. Much further into the summer, Ben and I will travel to Romania and Bulgaria for a wedding and to visit friends, so I need some prep material to get us ready!
At the Union Square Green Market, we picked up farm fresh buttermilk and a few shelling peas before making our way back to Mara's Homemade to watch the next game, over...
Served around 2:30pm. Mara's $4 draft beer special had us ordering Andy-Gators! I indulged in just two during lunch.
We started with sandwiches; I went for the crawfish po'boy!
The dressing really makes this sandwich special. I am not sure what's in there (some sort of remulade?) but it is lightly spicy and rich. Also, the crawfish are crunchy and not gooey like the clams from the Urban Lobster Shack or the oyster po'boy I had from the Oyster Bar a few weeks back.
Mara told us that this might be the last summer weekend for fresh crawfish, so we ordered up a three pound bucket to snack on while watching the great Netherlands/Camaroon game. Served around 3:45pm.
Just look at all that deliciousness!
Around 9:30pm, I popped some browned butter corn to nibble while we watched The Orphan. The popcorn was delicious. The movie sucked.
I also went ahead and finished up the rest of my Cold Stone Creamery ice cream from earlier in the week.
Well, today was a white-hot mess of overindulgence, wasn't it?
